About

My name is John Martin and I set up Traditional Boundaries because I have a passion for preserving local woodlands and rural crafts.

My logs come mainly from overgrown under managed woodlands in Surrey and West Sussex that were once vibrant coppices that towards the middle of the 20th Century have declined for a number of reasons. I am now working to restore several of these. Coppicing is a traditional management method that has continued for centuries.

Hard wood trees are cut off at ground level or close to it, and will in the following spring season sprout new shoots, which will grow over a number of years into a crop of rods and poles from each stump or "stool". These are then harvested when they have reached the required size and have a great many uses like fencing and products for your garden, such as bean and pea sticks. The cycle of cutting depends on the species. If this practice is kept up, a stool can go on growing and producing timber for hundreds of years.

By maintaining woodlands in this way it helps to preserve a natural habitat for wildlife and plants.

By buying from UK sources like mine you will help sustain local woodlands for future generations.
