Horticultural (Biochar) Fines

Horticultural Fines

Fines are a by-product of making Barbeque Charcoal. They are the small particles left after the lumpwood charcoal has been sieved out of the kiln and extracted for barbecuing.

They have many uses in the garden as they have a high potash value with a ph of 8-9. For example, the finer grains can be used as a soil improver and the slightly larger pieces as a soil mix for potted plants and hanging baskets, as follows:

Size of fines up to 10 mm:

  • Light sandy soils can be encouraged to retain moisture by using one part fines to 15 parts soil approximately
  • Improves drainage in heavy soils

Sizes of fines 10mm - 20mm

  • Ideal for hanging baskets and pots to keep soil ‘sweet’ and ‘moist’
  • Absorbs excess moisture, reducing risk of over-watering, then releases moisture back to the compost, slowing the drying rate
  • Can be used when tree planting by placing in the dug hole reduces water stagnation

This is a natural product, produced in Surrey from British hardwoods and has no additives of any sort.
